Knots leeding through paintwork on door Knot bleeding through paintwork

Knotting is an essential part of the preparation process for any timer that is to be painted,   Knotting is applied over all visible knots prior to priming whether they are seeping resin or not.    It purpose is to seal the resin and to resist its contamination of the subsequent paint system, although resinous knots in unseasoned timbers can prove difficult to seal.

It is best to sand the surface before applying the knotting.  Apply liberally but do not pool. Allow the knotting to fully dry before priming the surface.

Knotting is widely available in many Brands and can be purchased, Clear, Brown or White.

Some primers such as Zinsser BIN can also act as Knotting due to their stain blocking qualities however when painting heavily knotted timber or timbers where the knots have already began to seep resin I always use a Knotting first.
